It is quickly becoming apparent that we are not the easiest place to find should you stray from the Cumbria
Way.Thank you to everyone who has so far tried, some successfully and others who have been thwarted at every turn. I must
stress that we are primarily a walkers tea room and are advertised as such. However this doesn't mean that you cannot
come by car as long as you are prepared to walk some of the way.I have set out various routes below which will hopefully help.If
you would like to clarify anything then please feel free to e-mail or phone and I shall get back to you as soon as possible. 1.From The Gill in Ulverston. Option A The
Gill is the official starting point of the Cumbria Way and there is a pay and display car park here.If you stand on the car
park with Ulverston Town Centre behind you you will see the stone terrace houses almost pointing you towards the trees. The
path entrance has a sign marking the start of the Cumbria Way.The path from the car park takes you beside a stream. After about
100 yards the path splits.(Bear left for Option A and right for Option B)If you bear left
and continue along by the stream this is the official Cumbria Way.Keep going and you will shortly come to a left turn up a
walled path.At the top is a sign pointing right.Follow the signs which will take you through some fields until you come to
Old Hall Farm. Now if you want to continue on the Cumbria Way pass through the farm and follow the Cumbria Way sign to
the left past the farmhouse next to the stream.(If you want to take a flatter and quicker route carry on through the farm
ignoring the Cumbria Way sign and walk up to the road where you join the Option B route).Following the Cumbria
Way signs carry on through fields (quite a steep climb for a few hundred yards) past a large house on the right and over
stiles eventually arriving at a road.Higher Lath Farm is facing you.Turn right here and follow the road downhill for approx
800 yards and you come to Windy Ash.You will be rewarded with fabulous views from the top of the hill but it is a bit of a
climb. The total time for this walk is 40 - 50 minutes depending on speed.Walking back is all downhill following the road and
takes between 25 and 35 minutes.
Option B 100 yards from the Gill where the path splits bear
right up the hill. This is an easy tarmac path with benches along the way. After 5 minutes or so you will come into fields and
then to Old Hall Road.Turn left here and follow the road.In a few hundred yards you will pass the entrance to Old Hall Farm
on the left.Keep on going for approx 800 yards along the road passing the Alpaca Farm on the left hand side. You will
shortly come to a small T junction.Turn left here up the hill.In 100 yards the road splits.Keep to the right up the hill
for another 100 yards and you will see Windy Ash on the right hand side.Keep going past the house around the tight right
hand bend in the road and you will come to the Cumbria Way gate and the tea room entrance is on the right. This walk is much
easier and quicker taking between 25 and 35 minutes. You can still take the scenic route by turning left into Old Hall Farm
and picking up the Cumbria Way at the farm entrance as described above.
Now if any of the above is not what you
had in mind when you were thinking of afternoon tea then there is a small layby (3 - 4 cars max) on the right hand side
of Old Hall Road between Old Hall Farm and the Alpaca Farm which you could park in.However please don't be tempted to
park on any of the grass verges with part of your car in the road.We have seriously big tractors using the roads every day
and there is no margin for error.Believe me the tractor will come off best every time !
I hope this helps but if
you have any suggestions to improve then please e-mail to let me know.Good Luck!
